Our Purpose

To promote understanding, compassion, and acceptance of each other and of our beliefs.

The Inter-Religious Council of Linn County was formed in 1993, in order to encourage understanding, respect, and friendship among persons of different faiths in this community. Our membership includes persons from eight different faith traditions, including Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Secular Humanist, and Unitarian-Universalist.

Statement Regarding the on-going conflict in Israel and Gaza:

Dear Friends,

As leaders of diverse faith communities, we are deeply troubled by the ongoing violence and loss of life in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank. While the roots of this conflict are complex, we believe there are always alternatives to violence. We call on all parties involved to work toward peace through open and honest dialogue.

Though we represent different religions, we share a belief in the fundamental dignity of every human being, regardless of race, ethnicity or creed. We share a commitment to compassion, justice and nonviolence. And we share a hope that peace can prevail in the Holy Land - for Israelis and Palestinians, Jews, Christians and Muslims alike.

In the spirit of our common humanity, we urge all those involved in this tragic conflict to reject hatred and revenge. We ask them to have the courage to work together towards a just and lasting peace. The alternative is more bloodshed, more fear, more grief.

As religious leaders, we pledge to continue encouraging interfaith dialogue and cooperation in our own communities. We will not give up hope. We know from experience that where there is a will for peace, a way can be found.

Now is the time for bold leadership and vision on all sides. Now is the time for compromise. The future can be different from the past. But we must build it together.

May we be guided toward that future.
